Skin Deep: The business of beauty

A new five part series looks at the issue of the lack of regulations in the beauty industry.

It is presented by Jessica Jane Clements of “I’m A Celebrity Get Me out of Here” who has suffered her own injury from beauty treatments when a treatment on her lips went wrong. She had her lips plumped with fillers. However, the filler that was injected into her lips was supposed to be used to de-wrinkle faces. Her lips swelled up and she had two pea size lumps at the end of her lips.

Extreme reaction to hair dye causes death

A teenager has died after a severe reaction to hair dye. After only 20 minutes of the hair dye being applied the girl started to frantically pull the foil from her hair. She then started vomiting and then collapsed and had a violent fit.

The paramedics were called and she was taken to hospital but she later died. An investigation into her death has been conducted but her death is currently unexplained.

Eyebrow threading - make sure it is done properly

Eyebrow threading seems to be the new method for styling your eyebrows over plucking and waxing.

There is a new nationwide chain that is changing the image of brow bars with no need for appointments and can walk in for an eyebrow threading. It already has branches in over 20 Debenhams and House of Fraser.

New craze fish foot spa’s could spread HIV and Hepatitis C

Health experts have warned that this new popular treatment could spread diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C.

This new treatment is known as fish foot spa pedicures who’s popularity is on the rise. It involves putting your feet into a large tank of warm water which is filled with garra rufa fish. When the feet are placed in the tank of water the fish nibble the dead skin from the customer’s feet. It also aims to leave the customers feet looking smooth and attractive.

New technology could mean the end of unsightly facial hair

Permanent hair removal treatment has become popular over the past few years with laser hair removal being the most popular method.

Laser hair removal procedure requires a number of treatments as the hair could only be treated at the growth stage and not all hairs are at the growth stage at the same time. Patients are usually hair free within eight to ten treatments and these are carried out at four to six week intervals.

Allergic reaction causes woman hospitalisation for 3 days and almost killed her

A woman was hospitalised in the high dependancy unit after using a bottle of hair dye. After applying the dye to her hair it started to weep with pus and caused her skin to inch uncontrollably. However, within 2 days her symptoms had worsened further and was life threatening.

Hair transplant treatment being used for over-plucked eyebrows

A more modern method of disguising overplucked eyebrows has created a surge in women having hair transplant surgery on their eyebrows. This treatment was initially used for women whose eyebrows had thinned due to medical or genetic conditions but has had a high demand recently from other women too.

More celebrities get hair replacement treatments yet research shows it often fails

Celebrities such as James Nesbitt, Wayne Rooney, Jason Gardiner and Jason King have recently stepped out into the public eye after having hair replacement treatment. This has led to some clinics which provide these procedures having up to 150% increase in clients. However, new research shows that some methods of hair replacement treatment can have a failure rate of up to 50%. This failure rate is very disappointing when some hair replacement treatments can take up eight hours to complete.

Dangers of Brazilian blow dry

We act for a number of clients who have had the chemical straightening procedure that is also known as the Brazilian blow dry.

Celebrities such as Jennifer Anniston, Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan are all fans of the treatment known as the Brazilian blow dry, however this treatment is causing a healthscare and causing many problems for its users. It has even led to the Irish government to recall the products that are used for the chemical straightening process.

Customer left looking like a scarecrow is paid £5000 compensation

A woman has received £5250 in compensation after a hair colouring went horrifically wrong.  The treatment in which she had five separate bleaching treatments on the same day led to her looking like a “scarecrow” with a burning scalp and straw like hair. The first treatment led to her hair turning orange and therefore the other treatments took place to try and rectify the hair.
